Poetry
Forget stuffy and boring. Poetry is fun!
Two Christchurch teenagers have beaten out entries from around the country to claim the top places in the New Zealand Post National Schools' Poetry award.
Charlotte Trevella (right) won best poem category for her work To a Sister while Sammy Hickson of Middleton Grange won best lyric poem for You just can't see it. Hickson's poem was set to music by Jason Kerrison of Op Shop.
Michelle Grafton of Hornby High School was also a finalist in the best lyric category.
National Schools Poetry Awards
The Poetry Awards are for Years 11 to 13 New Zealand students. In 2009 there were two prize categories – Best Poem and Best Lyric.
New Zealand Post supported the Awards from 2007 to 2009. The organisers are currently seeking a new major sponsor and expect to run this event again, in conjunction with the National Schools Writing Festival, in 2011.
