Bringing down the crime rateFor our January / February 2006 competition we asked you how you thought we could bring down the crime rate. Here are some of your responses:
i think young people need more to do if there mums and dads didnt have to work as much as they do there would be more time to teach there kids about life i think the youth crime rate is high because no one has the time to do simple things with there kids like water fights, sports, picnics or just talking and listening with there kids etc.
Capital punishment for murders, no matter what they say, it DOES work, and a person thinks twice before comitting a murder if they know they'll have to sacrifice their life for it.
safety checkpoints so that if you see anything suspicious or are afraid for safety while in town then you have somewhere you can go where there are police etc.
I don't think there is much we can do a community,
each individual needs to know right from wrong...
Isn't the question what would make us all good people??
i think that if there were beta ages for driving like 16 instaed of 15 and and bringing the age up for drinking as alot of crime is commited by young teens drunk
I think that working together as a community and having a good network around you. More policemen around the streets would make a huge difference too.
if adults would make more things for the 'bad' kids to do then thats where they would be rather than on the streets stealing and doing drugs, etc, etc. if they have more trust in them and don't go crazy at them when they walk in a store thinking they are shoplifters. it may not work but its worth a try because these kids don't have proper homes, even perhaps dropping centres would be good so they can have a place, bed meal and clothes and not have to shoplift all of these things.
if there was more time spent on giving us youth more to do we wouldnt have to find something to do ourselves which is most likely going to be something really dangerous or outrages we as teens want fun and action we need this in a positive enviroment otherwse we will most likely turn to petty crime which evently will probly become more and more sereous crimes my advice is to stop crime at the source.
more longer sentences for the people and for the people who are quite naughty should take a day field trip to the prision and be like them for a day and they might think that i shouldn't do that any more
By identifying proplem children at a younger age and having the nessecary skilled people and programs in place to catch them before they become a more serious problem to society.
More competitions like this; perhaps focus more on preparedness than prevention; ask other youth their ideas on this topic perhaps ask the at-risk and caught youth through police and other youth through school questionnaires and such. Keep frequent tabs on offenders and punish repeat offenders to the fullest extent to prevent repeat offending. I find that there is no stronger incentive for someone to do something right than "Im'a tell your mum" Also not so much have more police on the streets but have more police just in certain proven problematic areas and suburbs for example more police in Aranui than in Cashmere and so forth.
Less violence on tv and in movies
In my opinion, several things need to be called into question to bring the crime rate down. First, and foremost, the mistaken notion whereby the mental institutions let people out over christmas. My mum recently came upon a peeping tom looking in her window and all the cops could say was that they let a lot of the crazies out over christmas to give the staff a break. Secondly, not more police walking the streets, but more police patroling and covering more ground. Most of ChCh doesn't even see a cop car unless they're walking down Columbo street. And thirdly, a removal of the burden placed on the judicial system by looking seriously at petty crimes - boy racers, for starters, are quite often unduly punished wasting police time and resources and court time and resources as well.
I think that there should be areas for young teenager 'skaties',etc. to 'hang out' at and also gangs, etc. so that there is a specific area and it is isolated, as to not cause any trouble to the public
More sercurity cameras around the city especially in dodgy places like alleyways etc. but have them visible so criminals can see that they are being watched. If the camera gets smashed the police know whereabouts that it happened.
Crime Fighters and Special Agents cause then everyone would be too scared to be naughty
I think there should be better video surveillance and police patrol in the busy city areas, particularly at times when people are most likely to be at risk of assault. Friday nights for example when adults have had some drinks and some get involved in physical attacks. So, i think that better police coverage in the busy late night city areas would greatly decrease the crime rate.
Money, as the saying goes, is the root of all evil. It has been well-documented that a lack of income, more specifically a lack of employment, is one of the main contributors to the rising crime rates. So my solution would be to provide more free skills courses to adults and young people, who may be experiencing difficulting in gaining employment. Such courses would not only increase one's skill (and hence make a person more employable), but also increase their confidence and motivation. Further, more of their time and effort would be put into achieving success in this course, and as a result they would be less likely to commit a crime.
better punishments, get the naughty people to have a day in the life of a prision person and then they can expirence what it is like and they mightstop because of how harsh or make up a prision camp for naughty people so they are in the life of a prision person
i think having the legal age of driving, drinking, and buying ciggarettes higher would bring the crime rate down.
if we had World peace
I think that if jail was still as hard as it was back in the days, these days its cruisy but if it was still terrible people wouldnt do anything coz they wont want to be yelled at for the rest of there lifes.
(For teen crime) places to just go and hang out, so that they're not on the streets. Maybe a few houses around the city.
This has been proved by police but if you put some classical music and put spot lights in places were there are lots of graffiti then the number of taggers there should be 0%
Having more youth aimed concerts, sport activities etc to get them off the streets and give them somthing else to do
make advertising for alcohole and party pills etc. illegal
To be honest i dont think any thing would bring the crime rate down but what we kan do is help each other talk to eact other more and gt motorvated kauze if people aint being motorvated then of course they will find someting else to do which mostly involves crime.
I think that to help bring the crime rate down is the help of our society and our community, yes its all very well sending more police into the street but there is many juties that they need to carry out, its our public that needs to more aware of the situation at hand, take precautions and do the right thing by keeping an eye out in your local community, if we all work together it makes things alot easier for everybody. Alot of the time now, its our youth that is commiting these crimes, and often its because there guardians/parents arent really bothered with what they are doing or who they are with. Thats why many of teenagers need more strict curfew rules created to insure that they are not hanging around late at night and getting into trouble. Possibly a thing could be put out through schools about awareness and the consicences of crimes and maybe that might change a few minds after hearing about the consicences that need to be payed.
as much as i dont like the police i reckon there should be more around. during the week alot of crime happens at night but there are few cops around to do anything. and i reckon that to bring the crime rate down u should and taking some of the street kids off the streets and giving them a place to go at nights and a lil bit of money a week so they dont have to do crime. coz most of them are to young to even get a benefit or to work
I think the crime rate would decrease if it wasn't considered cool to do bad things. eg: hurt people
less stuff to steal
