Midnight in Motion are a band that are pretty clear about their musical influences - it's pop punk all the way.
This Christchurch three-piece consists of Nick Taylor, 15, on drums and backing vocals (t-shirt: Blink 182), Sam Stokes, 16, on bass (t-shirt: Simple Plan) and Matt Clark, 15, on vocals and guitar (t-shirt: All Time Low ). The trio have been together for only a few months but are already playing gigs at places like Zebedees, and LYFE and they’re planning on taking part in SmokefreeRockquest 09.
These guys are clearly, really into their music, practising several hours a day at school (they all go to Lincoln High). Working in band practice around part-time jobs can be challenging but when you love playing and performing why wouldn’t you?
The band aren’t phased by fans of other musical genres.
“We get a bit of abuse from metallers sometimes,” Matt says.
Usually bands really talk themselves up in interviews in a “we’re the greatest band in the world and we rock out” sort of way but Midnight in Motion take a slightly different approach. In closing, Matt, the band’s “sort-of manager” (i.e. the guy who organises the gigs) wants to the world to know that they are “not as bad as everyone says we are”.
So for these guys it’s pop punk all the way. Despite being serious about music and about putting in time for practice the guys still know how to enjoy themselves.
“It’s all about having fun,” Nick says.
“We like to get out there and have a laugh”.
Having fun is also how the band got its name. When asked what “Midnight in Motion” means Nick explains: “ It’s party time - it’s when the party starts”.
Young but keenBoth Nick and Matt have been playing for about a year. Matt started out on drums in another band before passing the sticks to Nick, in favour of guitar and singing duties. Both he and Sam really rate Nick’s drumming skills. Sam has been playing guitar for a couple of years but admits that he didn’t actually own his own bass guitar until recently.
Though Midnight in Motion is a fairly new band all the members took part in Rockquest last year. They’re keyed up and keen to improve on their performance this year in May when it kicks off again.
The band are also planning on releasing an EP later in the year. You might think that this would involve a fancy-schmancy recording studio. No chance.
Nick says they use “a busted old four track” at school.
“You’re not a real band if you don’t record on a four-track”.
Interesting. Possibly Blink 182 don’t know this. Someone should tell them.
