At the age of 16, Esther Kim has earned the chance to play to a crowd of over 100,000 at Christchurch’s ASB Classical Sparks on the eve of Waitangi Day.
Esther, from Auckland, won the right to perform as soloist with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra after winning the Queenstown Violin Summer School 2009 Artistic award. She has been playing since she was nine.
The opportunity to perform for such a large audience is an extraordinary experience for any artist. Few adult professional musicians will never play to such a huge crowd - let alone 16-year-olds - so it’s a massive achievement for someone still in high school.
Other free events this weekend take place at the Weather Station Lawn, Botanic Gardens; Cathedral Square and Scarborough Reserve, Sumner as part of the ever popular Sunday Bandstand series.
ASB Classical Sparks marks the eve of New Zealand's national day, Waitangi Day – an event close to the hearts of Cantabrians and much appreciated by visitors.
As a prelude to the evening (from 6.45pm), ASB Classical Kids will showcase talented young classical musicians from across the city. Stroll through Hagley Park and be inspired by these wonderful young musicians.
